Pastor Steve Mundfrom of Grace Free Lutheran in Valley City and Pastor Frank Cherney of New Hope will alternate pulpits for Lent this year. The texts for the sermon series are found in the seven Penitential Psalms. The schedule containing dates, Psalms and speakers is at the bottom of the page. The word penitent means feeling or expressing humble or regretful pain or sorrow for sin. We often use the word repentant. These psalms are not necessarily all expressions of contrition for personal sin; but they all point the finger at sin as the source of corruption and trouble. We will find in them the elements of true repentance. During times when believers have wanted to express repentance and especially during Lent these seven penitential Psalms are a divinely inspired resource. The designation penitential dates from the seventh century. They help us to understand penitence as we recognize our sinfulness, express our sorrow and ask for God’s forgiveness. Something that is sorely lacking in the church today is true repentance that leads to Godly living.
